About Us

We are a friendly bowling club based in Hassocks, the gateway to the South Downs. Our club was formed in 1922 and we have enjoyed a long and successful history - more information can be found on our Club History page at www.adastrabowling.club.

Our bowling green is open from late April to late September with several matches a week organised throughout the season. Matches are played in various formats with Ladies, Gentlemen's and mixed sex matches arranged both home and away, all played in a friendly atmosphere in keeping with the etiquette of the sport. Most of our bowling is mixed sex matches organised against teams from other local villages and towns in the county – a great way to meet others and to see a bit of the wider world at the same time! For those who are more competitive, club members may enter league and cup games and County and National competitions. We have a proud record of success in competitive bowling - see our Honours Board page for more details.

The club runs two informal events played throughout the season - on Monday evenings at 5:30pm we have an 'Aussie Pairs'  Social Bowling roll-up and on Thursday afternoons at 2pm we have a friendly 'Triples' competition. Scratch teams are selected from the bowlers who attend so each week members get an oportunity to play with different bowlers. We also have a Friday League, which provides a good way of developing bowling skills in a friendly environment. Our own internal competitions culminate in Finals Weekend which is held around the August Bank Holiday. See the Club Competitions page for more details.

Those new to bowling are invited to our Open Days which are held during the season and our Fun Day. Details of these events are posted around the village and advertised in the local press.

In the Autumn and Winter months members organise indoor bowling at local clubs - bowls is a sport that can be played all year round.

You are never to young (or old) to take up bowling - the health benefits are well documented and include improved fitness - a bowler can walk 2-3 miles during a match - improved co-ordination and skills development, increased confidence and self-esteem and enhanced well-being - and it’s a great way to meet new people.

We are especially keen to attract families to the club and have a number of family themed events planned during the season.

The club has qualified coaches who arrange regular coaching courses that are free to all members. The club maintains a number of different sizes of bowls, including smaller children’s coloured bowls, which new members can use until they purchase a set of their own.

In addition to all the normal bowling club activities, we have a thriving Social Committee and other committed members who organise and provide the catering for coffee mornings, Invitation Days, Christmas party activities, quizzes, whist & bingo nights, tournament events, public Fun and Open days and a host of ad-hoc activities. Events take place at our Pavilion all year round which helps members to keep in touch during the Autumn and Winter months.

Each year we hold a Charity Day, selecting a good cause to support.

We work with young people and encourage them to take up the sport. We have worked with local schools for the past few years and children can attend our after school club which is held on Thursday afternoons starting at 3:45pm. We also offer an opportunity for children to bowl at our green on Saturday mornings during the summer holidays. See our Junior Bowlers page for more details.
