King Alfred’s Tower – A better walk with quality hiking boots

King Alfred’s Tower is an incredible triangular folly built believe it or not in the memory of a Saxon King called King Alfred. The tower was built in memory of the stand that King Alfred and his men made against the fearless Danes

King Alfred and his men were outnumbered but fought valiantly in AD 878 to defeat the Danish invaders and help protect England from the invading force that probably would have taken England if is wasn’t for King Alfred. The amazing and spectacular folly was is believed to be built on the exact spot where king Alfred and his brave men made their stand all those years ago.

Why not spend a day at the spectacular tower, here at newforestfootwear we recommend wearing the correct type of hiking footwear as there is miles of outstanding woodland to be explored and a lot of steps to be climbed. It is well worth climbing the tower as there are impressive views from the top of the tower at 1000ft above sea level making the 205 steps to the top more than worth the effort. Views of the 3 surrounding counties Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire can be enjoyed by all.

A walk in North Dorest

What a great way to enjoy the great British country side and keep in trim. Dorset is located in the South West of England and holds many treasures that are well away from the tourists areas.

Treat yourself to an amazing array of colour by visiting North Dorset. The little village of Bourton which is situated just off the A303 London To Exeter road midway between Mere (Wiltshire) and Wincanton (Somerset) is an excellent starting point for your hiking adventure. Parking is easy and free. The village boosts of a Village pub (the White Lion) built in the 16th century and a village garage combined Post Office. What more could you want in a thriving village!

Almost opposite the Garage is a lane called milk factory lane which runs parallel to the River Stour which is mealy a small stream that runs quietly along. The backdrop one can see the sheep grazing and caring for their young.

Take the second turning on the left passing the old iron foundry where during world war one over 3 million bombs were produced. Now just a derelict old building which looks as if it was the casualty of the war. This lane is known as kites nest and soon you will pass Kites nest house on your left. A few steps that are located just past this house will lead you to an open field. Now you will be glad you have bought a good quality pair of walking boots to protect your feet. A walking pole is also an excellent accessory for such a hike.

A foot path crosses this field just continue as it is well sign posted. To your left you will have a magnificent view of the Blackmore Vale and beyond. You will look down on the Village Church and observe the unhurried life of rural England. Fresh is the air that you breathe while you continue.

Soon you will reach a wooded area that occasionally you will see fox cubs playing oblivious to the human stress. As you emerge from this wooded area you will see a tremendous array of brilliant colour on your left of trees in blossom or flower. You may be forgiven for thinking you have reached paradise. At the end of this field turn left and you will arrive at Chafymoor House. Continue past this house until you reach the old A303. Turn left into the village and continue until you reach the White Lion Pub where a cool drink during awaits. You can enjoy this walk at any time of the year but it is essential to keep warm and dry.
